It appears increasingly likely that our government will be paralyzed over the coming months, not acting on the important issues we face as a society, while the Radical Republicans put the country through the trauma of the impeachment of President Clinton. I have written a commentary on this Coup Attempt by the Radical Republicans, and have included links where you can obtain more information about impeachment and about the only time that a President was impeached in our history, the trial and acquittal of Andrew Johnson, as well as comparisons between the Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton cases.
Although it seems as if these issues will be placed on the back burner while the Congress tries to oust the President, I have also included papers on some other matters of importance that the Congress should be acting on, rather than by acting contrary to the wishes of the vast majority of the people who oppose impeachment.
Lately, there has been a great deal of attention on the future of the Social Security Trust Fund, and whether it will be able to handle the onslaught that will be caused by the retirement of the Baby Boomers. Most of the proposals that have been floated so far call for dramatic reductions in benefits, higher taxes, or both. Over a two year period, I have developed a proposal that will not only keep the Social Security Trust Fund solvent until 2075 under the worst case scenario, but will also pay the entire U.S. federal debt by 2035. And, my proposal will accomplish this without increasing the taxes needed to pay for it or reducing the currently projected benefits. I have now updated this paper to reflect the latest projections of the Social Security Administration.
Twice, I was honored to be the Democratic candidate for Pennsylvania State Representative from the 164th Legislative District, in Delaware County. During those campaigns, I worked with a number of intelligent, talented and dedicated people to present creative proposals for trying to resolve some of our most persistent problems. One of the proposals that I was most proud of was an innovative way to pay for the rehabilitation of abandoned houses through the use of a one time start up grant. You can read that proposal here.
